Harvard Opens Ivy Play With Dominant Road Win Over Dartmouth
The Harvard women’s basketball team (8-6, 1-0 Ivy) opened Ivy League play emphatically on Saturday afternoon, cruising past Dartmouth (9-5, 0-1 Ivy) for a 72-47 victory in Hanover, N.H. A balanced offensive attack and stifling defensive performance after halftime helped the Crimson pull away in the third quarter and never looked back.
The win marked Harvard’s fourth straight Ivy League opener victory, continuing a trend of strong conference starts for Head Coach Carrie Moore’s group. Even against a Dartmouth defense that looked to be amongst the Ivy League’s stoutest in non-conference play, Harvard found enough rhythm and created enough extra possessions to turn the matchup into a runaway.
The opening minutes were defined by missed shots and physical half-court possessions on both ends. The Crimson scraped together a slim 6-4 advantage five minutes in, leaning on defensive discipline and second-chance opportunities to stay afloat while both offenses searched for a spark.
That spark arrived in quick succession. Back-to-back three-pointers from sophomore guard Alayna Rocco and freshman guard Olivia Jones ignited Harvard, forcing Dartmouth to burn an early timeout as Harvard’s lead suddenly ballooned. The Big Green briefly steadied itself, but the Crimson ended the quarter with the final two baskets to take a 20-11 lead after ten minutes.
Dartmouth competed fiercely in the second frame, but Harvard never allowed its cushion to shrink below nine. The Crimson continued to manufacture extra possessions on the glass and stayed composed against Dartmouth’s defensive pressure. Late in the half, a jumper from sophomore guard Nina Emnace and then a three from freshman guard Aubrey Shaw created a five-point swing that further shifted momentum, sending Harvard into the locker room up 36-21.
The Crimson delivered its best basketball out of the break. Harvard opened the third quarter with a 10-2 run, stretching the margin and dashing any lingering hope of a Dartmouth rally. The Crimson’s defensive intensity ramped up, forcing tough looks and holding the Big Green to just 10 points in the quarter while the offense kept piling on. By the end of the quarter, Harvard had blown the game open with a 60-31 lead.
Dartmouth found more offensive success in the fourth quarter, but the contest was long decided. Harvard rotated bodies, continued to control the boards, and closed out the opener with a convincing 25-point win.
Junior captain Abigail Wright paced the Crimson with 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting and finished one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards. Wright did most of her damage on the offensive glass, pulling down five offensive rebounds to extend possessions and keep Dartmouth’s defense under constant strain.
Jones provided another strong lift off the bench, tallying a career-best 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting while stuffing the box score with five rebounds, four assists, a block, and a steal. The freshman’s early three-pointer helped fuel Harvard’s first-quarter surge, and her poised ball-handling kept the offense organized throughout the contest.
Senior guard Saniyah Glenn-Bello and senior forward Katie Krupa each added nine points, while junior guard Mary Hollensteiner contributed seven points in productive minutes off the bench. In total, 11 different Crimson players scored, a reflection of Harvard’s consistent energy and execution across all 40 minutes.
The Crimson’s work on the glass was a defining factor all afternoon. Harvard, which has been among the Ivy League’s best offensive rebounding teams, continued that trend by collecting 20 offensive boards and winning the rebounding battle 45-31. Those extra possessions paired with a disciplined defensive effort helped Harvard turn a competitive first half into a decisive second-half separation.
With the win, Harvard begins Ivy League play with momentum and will look to build on its strong start as the conference slate continues. The Crimson will head back to Cambridge for its home Ivy opener, returning to Lavietes Pavilion to host Columbia on Saturday, Jan. 10, in a rematch of last season’s Ivy League Tournament Championship game.
