The Harvard track and field team split strong performances among two competitions this past weekend, including a top-10 height nationally from junior Tito Alofe in the men’s high jump and a record-breaking 1000-meter time from junior Sophia Gorriaran.

At Boston University’s John Thomas Terrier Classic on Friday, Gorriaran—who last week set what was briefly the top time nationally in the women’s 800-meter—ran a 2:38.75 in the women’s 1000-meter open, setting the Ivy League record in the event by more than four seconds.

On Saturday at the Harvard Invitational, Alofe jumped 2.21 meters in the men’s high jump in his season debut, a height that is tied for sixth-best in the nation, just four centimeters behind the top spot. The current national best of 2.25 meters is also Alofe’s overall career-best, with him achieving that height at last season’s Ivy League Heptagonal Outdoor Championships.

As the indoor season reaches its midpoint, many Crimson athletes have garnered strong times in their respective events, and with just three more weekends of competition before Ivy League Heps, some athletes have emerged as strong contenders to stand atop the Ancient Eight’s podium.

In the men’s sprints, junior Amari Turner continues to post improving times in his first season competing with the team, including his 21.16 in the 200-meter, which now ranks second in school history. Turner is likely to compete in the 60-meter event as well, with a personal best of 6.75.

Another athlete from the men’s team to watch out for is standout freshman Yannick Kraus, who holds the team’s season highs in the pole vault and long jump and posted a 5043 in the heptathlon at last weekend’s Harvard Invitational, another team best.

On the women’s side, sophomore sprinter Ella Cooper is tearing it up in the short distance, with her 200-meter and 300-meter times leading the team and her 60-meter time just four hundredths of a second behind sophomore Saige Forbes, another stellar young sprinter for the Harvard women’s team.

Also on the female front is the team’s one-two punch in the weight throw, with senior Mechaela Denson and junior captain Alice Mihas continuing to compete at a high level alongside one another.

For relays, both the men’s and women’s 4x400 squads are some of the top quartets in school history, with each holding a top-10 time in the program’s record book.

Next up, the Crimson will make appearances this weekend at both the UMass Lowell Riverhawk Invitational and the ECAC Championships.
