Harvard women’s golf delivered its strongest performance of the spring, tying for sixth at the Therese Hession Buckeye Invitational in Columbus, Ohio, while taking down a ranked opponent and building momentum ahead of the Ivy League Championships.

The Crimson posted a three-round total of 911 (+47), tying No. 43 Indiana and beating No. 28 Northwestern, marking the first time this season that Harvard has outshot a ranked team. Competing in a field that featured six top-50 programs, the result stands as a clear step forward after earlier spring finishes outside of the top 10.

The weekend belonged to sophomore Vanessa Zhang, who surged into third place individually with a score of 217 (+1). The reigning Ivy League Individual Champion and unanimous Rookie of the Year caught fire in the second round and never cooled off, carding back-to-back rounds of 70 (-2), including a bogey-free back nine on Saturday. Zhang’s five birdies in round two tied for the lowest round of the day, moving her up the leaderboard and helping lift Harvard into sixth place.

The 54-hole tournament was played over two days, 36 holes on Friday and 18 on Saturday, with five golfers competing for each team and the top four scorers counting in each round.

Harvard opened the tournament with a 305 (+17), sitting in seventh after the first 18 holes. Captain Iris Wang led the way early with a 74 (+2), highlighted by three birdies on the back nine. Sophomore Lucy Yuan (+4), Zhang (+5), and freshman Nikki Iniakov (+6) rounded out the scoring as the Crimson stayed within striking distance of first-place Ohio State.

The turning point came in Friday’s second round. Behind Zhang’s 70 and another steady 74 from Wang, Harvard shaved six strokes off its score to post a 299 (+11), jumping into sixth place. Yuan (+5) and freshman Dixon Hill (+6) contributed to a balanced effort that gave the Crimson momentum heading into the final round.

Zhang continued her push on Saturday with another 70, finishing just one stroke over par for the tournament. Yuan (+6), Iniakov (+7), and Hill (+8) completed the scoring as Harvard closed with a 307 (+19) to secure the tie for sixth.

Across the weekend, the Crimson totaled 33 birdies, the sixth-most in the field. Zhang stood out not only for her scoring but for her consistency, posting one of the lowest bogey totals in the tournament and finishing under par on par fours.

Behind her, Yuan finished tied for 26th at +15, while Wang placed tied for 29th at +16 after two strong opening rounds. Hill (T41, +21) and Iniakov (T54, +25) rounded out Harvard’s lineup, with freshman Sirina Ganne competing as an individual.

The result marks a sharp turnaround for a team that entered the weekend looking to reset after 14th and 11th-place finishes in its first two spring events. Now, the Crimson heads into the upcoming Ivy League Championships with confidence and a proven ability to compete with top competition in a field that features six top-50 programs.

Harvard will travel to Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J., for the Ivy League Championship from April 24-26, where the conference’s automatic NCAA bid will be on the line. After finishing second a year ago, the Crimson now looks well-positioned to contend for the Ivy League title and the conference’s automatic NCAA bid.
