Picketers Converge on Memorial Hall as Garber Addresses Visitas

Roughly 100 graduate student workers descended on Memorial Hall Sunday morning, spreading across all four entrances to Sanders Theatre ahead of Harvard President Alan M. Garber ’76’s Visitas welcome address.

Demonstrators had been picketing in the Science Center plaza since 8 a.m. before moving to Memorial Hall in a coordinated effort to confront Garber on his arrival. Garber entered Sanders Theatre at around 10:45 a.m., ahead of the 11 a.m. address. Dean of Admissions William R. Fitzsimmons ’67 was also scheduled to speak at the event.

As prospective students and their families gathered inside, picketers circled the building’s entrances.

”Sit down and negotiate!” demonstrators chanted. “You can’t investigate yourself!”
