Build Community at Harvard: 2023 Proctor Opportunities

Still looking for the perfect summer opportunity to expand both your leadership and mentorship skills? Eager to take a summer course while still being able to maintain a job on the side?

Serve as a proctor for Harvard Summer School (HSS) students, either in the Secondary School Program (SSP), General Program (GP), or Pre-College Program. Directors of these programs will work alongside Harvard Summer School Resident Deans and other HSS leadership to guide proctors in their various endeavors. They will work with the students and provide necessary supervision and advising. In an effort to create a safe and academically productive summer experience, proctors will foster a hospitable environment through various activities and programming within the Harvard community.

In addition to the proctor role, professional development seminars will be provided to Pre-College proctors in order to further discuss various functional areas in the field of higher education. However, there will be numerous benefits provided to all type of proctors as they help to support students as they make their transition to the intense Harvard Summer School environment, connecting students with available HSS and University resources along the way. Responsibilities include: living on campus throughout Proctor Orientation, Opening Weekend, and the entire Summer School term; ensuring student safety, security, and well-being for the duration of the term and set the tone for their entryway; informing students of Summer School policies, procedures, and calendar; abiding by and enforce policies by maintaining discipline and reporting violations; attending weekly meetings led by Resident Dean; holding regular office hours/weekly study breaks and be on-call for emergencies; supporting Summer School activities (chaperoning trips, supervising event/programs).

NOTE: General Program and Secondary School Program proctors may not work more than 20 hours a week at another job or enroll in more than one 4-credit, 7-week course

Applicants should be currently enrolled Harvard College undergraduate or graduate students, recent Harvard College graduates, First-Year Proctors and Resident Tutors, or undergraduate & graduate students at other institutions with comparable experience.

Successful candidates will possess a demonstrated interest in working with students and diverse populations. Additionally, proctors should have the physical capacity and social communication skills to supervise and address the needs of students under their care. Those applying to the Secondary School Program should also show some experience/interest in working with high school students.
