The University of Texas celebrated its 100th birthday last week, unveiling its unique "tracker organ," and as part of the anniversary ceremony.

The organ, which cost the university $487,000, took more than two years to build, and has 5258 pipes, 67 stops and approximately 100 ranks, and is the largest organ ever built in the U.S.

"There is not another organ like it in the world,' said Frank Speller. Texas associate professor of music and organist at the concerts.

"It is truly a masterpieces and a cultural boom to the Southwest." Speller added. "If they take care of it, the organ will be around for 400 or 500 years."

Besides concerts, the organ will be used for teaching, recording, accompaniment for ensembles, student recitals and visiting musicians who wish to play. --The Daily Texan
