Attorney General Andrea Campbell Endorses Brownsberger’s Reelection Bid

Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea J. Campbell endorsed longtime incumbent state Sen. William N. Brownsberger ’78 in his reelection campaign, marking his second endorsement from a statewide elected official.

Brownsberger, who has represented the Suffolk and Middlesex district since 2012, is facing his first challenger in more than a decade in Daniel A. Lander ’14, a former senior aide to Boston Mayor Michelle Wu ’07. The two will face off in the September Democratic primary.

Campbell’s previously unreported endorsement gives Brownsberger another high-profile backer as he seeks to fend off Lander, who has framed his campaign as a challenge to Beacon Hill’s status quo.

Campbell praised Brownsberger, the Senate’s president pro tempore, for his work on police accountability, criminal justice reform, housing, climate change, and immigration.

“He led the way for the passage of the landmark criminal justice and police accountability reforms,” Campbell wrote in a statement. “Thanks to his leadership, we remain one of the safest states in the country, while holding our law enforcement and criminal justice system to the highest standards.”

Campbell also said Brownsberger has worked to reduce housing costs, protect renters, fight climate change, and defend immigrants, calling him “an invaluable partner” in efforts to strengthen antitrust laws.

“I am extremely proud to support Senator Brownsberger for re-election,” she said.

Brownsberger praised Campbell’s commitment to challenging the Trump administration and defending residents across the state.

“AG Campbell has been a fierce defender of communities in our district and across Massachusetts, taking on the Trump administration and predatory corporations,” Brownsberger said in a statement.

Campbell has emerged as one of the state’s most visible opponents of the Trump administration, joining roughly 50 lawsuits over cuts to education, emergency services, health care, and transportation funding. Her office has said the lawsuits have helped protect nearly $4 billion in federal funding for the state.

In January, Campbell also led a multistate brief defending a court order that blocked the administration from barring international students from enrolling at Harvard.

In response to the endorsement, Lander campaign manager Will Woodring pointed to the “grassroots momentum” the campaign has built.

“Daniel has been endorsed by a broad, progressive group of elected leaders, labor unions, and community leaders that are tired of the broken status quo on Beacon Hill that is failing working people,” Woodring wrote in a statement.

Brownsberger has been endorsed by other top political figures in the state during this cycle, including Massachusetts Governor Maura T. Healey ’92, State House Majority Leader Michael J. Moran, and a slate of other state and city officials.

Lander has also built his support network on the campaign trail, garnering endorsements from elected officials in Cambridge and Watertown, as well as major state labor organizations and progressive groups.
